Here's Why You Don't Have a Successful Online Business

I've got a question for you.

Please raise your hand if you sincerely wish to have a successful online business.

Now keep your hand up if you have achieved this goal.

Odds are most of the hands just went down.

Why is that?

It's not for a lack of quality material. Whether you have read my books or acquired material from other sources, you are probably pretty clear on the "how" to make money on the internet.

But something is blocking you from making progress.

In my experience with people, there are a handful of reasons this happens.

Make Money Blogging

I've been blogging since 2003. I started JoelComm.com as a personal site where I could write articles about whatever I wanted.

I wrote about my family, my travels, my dog, movie reviews, computer games and whatever else crossed my mind.

But as I began taking my blog more seriously, I began creating more original content that brought value to others. My expertise in online business, site monetization, iPhone applications and other areas proved valuable for my readers.

Of course, you are also an expert in your particular niche. That means you have the opportunity to bring value to others seeking your expertise.

Having your own blog is a great way to share your expertise with others. But just having your own blog doesn't guarantee that others will read your articles. After all, they have to be able to find you!

Idol and Healthcare and Lost, Oh My

In this weekly update, you might find me trending a bit towards pop culture. There's just so much to talk about.

The title of the entry sandwiches a very serious issue in between two entertaining, yet ultimately meaningless television programs for a reason.

That's because the health care discussion (if you can call it that) that has taken place in the United States the past year has been largely void of substance. Instead, the current administration with their accomplices in congress have pushed through an incredibly damaging government-sponsored health care system that is going to blow up faster than a short-fused firecracker on the fourth of July.

So let's take a look at what the week had for in store for us. Of course, I always welcome civil discussion and comments.

Introduction

Hey everyone!

Have you been worried about duplicate content and the wrath of Google? If so, you'll definitely want to read today's article. Let's get straight to it! – Jill

Search Engine Marketing Issues

++There Is No Duplicate Content Penalty++

By Jill Whalen

The SEO industry has been plagued for years by a lack of consistencyPhoto Credit J.J. Verhoef with SEO terms and definitions. One of the most prevalent inaccurate terms we hear is "duplicate content penalty." While duplicate content is not something you should strive for on your website, there's no search engine penalty for having it.

Duplicate content has been and always will be a natural part of the Web. It's nothing to be afraid of. If your site has some dupe content for whatever reason, you don't have to lose sleep every night worrying about the wrath of the Google gods. They're not going to shoot lightning bolts at your site from the sky, nor are they going to banish your entire website from ever showing up for relevant searches.

They are simply going to filter out the dupes.

The search engines want to index and show to their users (the searchers) as much unique content as algorithmically possible. That's their job, and they do it quite well considering what they have to work with: spammers using invisible or irrelevant content, technically challenged websites that crawlers can't easily find, copycat scraper sites that exist only to obtain AdSense clicks, and a whole host of other such nonsense.

There's no doubt that duplicate content is a problem for search engines. If a searcher is looking for a particular type of product or service and is presented with pages and pages of results that provide the same basic information, then the engine has failed to do its job properly. In order to supply users with a variety of information on their search query, search engines have created duplicate content "filters" (not penalties) that attempt to weed out the information they already know about. Certainly, if your page is one of those that is filtered, it may very well feel like a penalty to you, but it's not – it's a filter.

Penalties Are for Spammers

Search engine penalties are reserved for pages and sites that are purposely trying to trick the search engines in one form or another. Penalties can be meted out algorithmically when obvious deceptions exist on a page, or they can be personally handed out by a search engineer who discovers the hanky-panky through spam reports and other means. To many people's surprise, penalties rarely happen to the average website. Sites that receive a true penalty typically know exactly what they did to deserve it. If they don't, they haven't been paying attention.

Honestly, the search engines are not out to get you. If you have a page on your site that sells red hats and another very similar page selling blue hats, you aren't going to find your site banished off the face of Google. The worst thing that will happen is that only the red hat page may show up in the search results instead of both pages showing up. If you need both to show up in the search engines, then you'll need to make them substantially unique.

Suffice it to say that just about any content that is easily created without much human intervention (i.e., automated) is not a great candidate for organic SEO purposes.

Article Reprints

Another duplicate-content issue that many are concerned about is the republishing of online articles. Reprinting someone's article on your site is not going to cause a penalty. While you probably don't want every article on your site to be a reprint of someone else's, if the reprints are helpful to your site visitors and your overall mission, then it's not a problem for the search engines.

If your own bylined articles are getting published elsewhere, that's a good thing. You don't need to provide a different version to other sites or not allow them to be republished at all. The more sites that host your article, the more chances you have to build your credibility as well as to gain links back to your site through a short bio at the end of the article. In many cases, Google doesn't even filter out duplicate articles in searches, but even if they eventually show only one version, it's still okay.

Inadvertent Multiple URLs for the Same Content

Where duplicate content CAN be a problem is when a website shows essentially the same page, but on numerous URLs. WordPress blogs often fall victim to this when multiple tags or categories are chosen to label any one blog post. The blog software then creates numerous URLs for the same article, depending on which category or tag a user clicked to view it. While this type of duplicate content won't cause a search engine penalty, it will often split the overall link popularity of the article, which is not recommended.

Any backend system or CMS that creates numerous URLs for any one piece of content can indeed be a problem for search engines, because it makes their spiders do more work. It's silly to have the spider finding the same information over and over again, when you'd rather have it finding other, unique information to index. This type of unintended duplicate content should definitely be cleaned up either through 301-redirects or by using the canonical link element (rel=canonical).

When it comes to duplicate content, the search engines are not penalizing you or thinking that you're a spammer; they're simply trying to show some variety in their search results pages and don't want to waste time indexing content they already have in their databases.

Share your comments and thoughts here.

P.S. If anyone would like to republish the above article, please email me your request and where it will reside, and I'll send you a short bio you can use with it for your site.

Twitter Question of the Week

++How often should one blog?++

This week, I asked my Twitter followers: "How often should one blog?" Here are their responses:

Matt_Siltala: Well, in a perfect world several solid posts a day from a team. But I think at least 5 times a week to keep readers.

TonyVerre: If you're a single blogger (like me), I say no less than 1 post every 2 weeks. Two posts per month – solid posts w/thought.

ann_donnelly: Many think u should blog at least once per week; but it depends on audience expectations, content requirements, etc.

lewisgprod: When you have something to say. Could be 1 to 100!

forestsoftware: I try for 1 or 2 times a week on one blog & 4 or 5 on another – it depends on what I have to say that is of value.

ETeare: Weekly, watch your stats, see if people keep reading, then increase to 2x weekly, watch stats, and so on.

netmeg: As often as one has something to say.

Jill: Bingo! netmeg has it exactly right.

Free Google Buzz Report

It seems like an eternity ago that MySpace first hit the web. But it was
2003 when the site launched and 2006 when it became the most popular social
networking site on the web.

Things have dramatically changed in a short period of time.

Facebook overtook MySpace as the leader just a brief two years later.
Which leaves me asking the questions Why would anyone continue to use
MySpace? Who ARE these people?

Regardless, social media is here to stay.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and thousands of wannabe sites provide
us with opportunities to connect with others from next door and all over the
world.

With such a massive market at stake, it was only a matter of time before
Google successfully entered the space.

Traffic Ultimatum - I bought this today!

Hey My,

Wow, that is one great looking web site.

You must have spent a lot of time and energy creating that content.

And your product... I can't imagine why people wouldn't want to buy
it!

You even selected a great domain name that has your keyword in it.

So how are you doing with it?

What?

You don't have any traffic?

Now there's a story I have heard again and again.

The truth is this... you can have the most beautiful website...

... the most original and compelling content

... and a world-changing product or service

But without traffic, it just doesn't matter.

Years ago, John Reese created the original Traffic Secrets course,
containing all the latest strategies for traffic generation.

But like I said... that was years ago. And since that time there
have been so many changes in the web that there just hasn't been a
comprehensive traffic course.

Until now!

I JUST discovered George Brown's Traffic Ultimatum course.

http://www.adsense-secrets.com/trafficu.html

George is a guy who spent the last 18 months experimenting with
every kind of traffic source you can find.

YouTube, AdWords, articles, Facebook, search engines, pay-per-view,
and more... George has done it all!

George made a lot of money along the way. You need to read his
story.

And now, George has put everything he knows about traffic
generation into a comprehensive Traffic Ultimatum Course that is
PACKED with the traffic strategies that are essential to your
online success!

http://www.adsense-secrets.com/trafficu.html

I have purchased this product myself. For the price, I know
without a doubt that I will discover some new things that I can
immediately put into action to increase traffic to my sites.

And if someone like me who gets hundreds of thousands of visitors
each month can stand to learn something, do you think you can
benefit as well?

Go ahead. Get a copy of George's Traffic Ultimatum Course right
now and get people to visit your web site asap!

Do good stuff,

Joel

P.S. - I am not only a customer, but since I believe in this
product I am also an affiliate. I wouldn't recommend it if I
didn't believe that this is totally worth it!

Transformation International and The Peanut Butter House

Last month, two of my team members had an opportunity to go to Monrovia, Liberia to work on a project intended to save lives of those in the malnourished and HIV-stricken country.

Chris Harper, my Video Producer, and Sarah Jane Griesemer, VP of Project Management, accepted the call to go to Liberia and meet the needs of people through a project called The Peanut Butter House. What they experienced during their week-long trip was undoubtedly life-changing.

JoelComm. com - Social Media Keynote Speaker and New Media Marketing Strategist

Social Media Keynote Speaker and New Media Marketing Strategist

Many people discover me for the first time through any number of products or services.

For some it is my iPhone applications. For others it is my book on making money with Google, The AdSense Code. Then there are those who know me from my sites that focus on affiliate marketing. Still others first found me through my social media presence or books (eg: Twitter Power).

Whenever I speak from the stage, people are always surprised to find out that I was the co-founded of one of the largest multiplayer gaming sites in the world, Yahoo! Games. They see the little avatar of the guy with the red cap, glasses and goatee and realize that it was me all along.

Even now, I suspect few people know how involved I am in a new mobile marketing startup called TextCast Live. But that's another story.

Regardless of what I am up to, my favorite thing of all to do is to share what I know with others.

Kontera Offers My Readers 70% Commissions

I can't believe it has been over five years since the release of my first ebook on how to make money with Google AdSense. Originally titled "What Google Never Told You About Making Money with AdSense", the ebook came out in January 1995 with just 66 pages. Today it is in its fourth edition and comes in at over 230 pages.

I still bring in around $500/day with AdSense. But Google is just ONE way that I make money with my sites.

In 2007, I discovered another contextual ad service that had great promise. Instead of using ad blocks made famous by AdSense, this new service invited publishers to copy and paste a piece of code on their pages and receive ads displayed IN-TEXT. That means that certain keywords would be highlighted as advertisements. When you roll your mouse over those keywords, a small advertisement would pop up under your mouse and invite you to click it.

Of course, a click on the ad means money for the site owner.

The service is called Kontera, and I regularly receive thousands of dollars each month from them.

OPEN IMMEDIATELY ...

Hi Adisak,

It's Dave Guindon with a brief message

to tell you about a new tool I reviewed
that drives a LOT of traffic FAST ...

***************************************
BUT ... IGNORE THE HYPE!
***************************************

As you probably know by now, I only
recommend *TOP* notch stuff that will
actually benefit you.

In fact, I get asked many times, usually
EVERY day, to promote other people's
products...

and in most cases I turn them down.

Why?

The reason is quite simple ... to not
only retain my credibility among the
IM community ..

But, also to look after your welfare!

Seriously, there is a TON of junk and
pure BS floating around that unfortunately
sucks away people's hard earned cash.

Now the person who created this new
traffic system that I am about to
recommend impressed me so much ...

... That he is one of only a few top
Joint-Venture partners that are in my
private inner circle!

In fact, this guy made over $1.2 million
from this single technique!

This is a VALID & REAL method that works...

At the peak of using this system, it
got over 95,237 visitors per day!

But the BEST part is, this was all done
with ...

ZERO GOOGLE

(which is amazing, since Google
 can be VERY expensive)

Gotta love it!

I strongly recommend taking a few moments
to check it out right now ...

Hope that helps and talk soon,

Hey everyone!

Hey everyone! We've got another great guest article on website copy from Karon Thackston today. Be sure to check out the Twitter question of the week and chime in on the website if you didn't catch the question on Twitter.

Let's get to it! – Jill

Search Engine Marketing Issues

++Is Your Website User-Centric or Company-Focused?++

By Karon Thackston © 2010, All Rights Reserved

Just for a moment, pretend you're a fly on the wall in my office. I'm on the phone with a prospective client and things are going well. We're talking about their target audience and they seem to have all the right answers. I am confident that these people "get it." Then the conversation takes a sharp left turn.

Client: "We want to build a website about our company."

Me: "We typically suggest building a website that's focused on the site visitor."

Client: "That's what we want to do. We want to tell them all about us."

Me: "If a client walked into your office, would you just start rambling on about your company? Or would you tailor your conversation to the person you were facing, finding out what they need and how you can help?"

Client: "Uh, well…"

Go look at your home page right now. How many instances of "we" and "us" and "our" do you see? And how many times is "you" or "your" used? You don't want to get caught we-ing all over yourself, now do you?

I have actually seen countless websites that completely ignore the site visitor. Not a single "you" or "your" on the entire page. Everything…every last sentence revolves around "us," "we" and "our." Can you just imagine what type of telephone or face-to-face conversation that would be? For some reason, placing information online instead of communicating verbally gives license to be completely self-centered.

The Transformation From We-Copy to You-Copy

"If the copy isn't supposed to be about us, what is it supposed to be about?" The copy should focus on how you can help your site visitors and what results they will see after using your products or services. Let me show you the difference.

Here's a snippet of copy from a business that provides services to protect daycare centers from parents who are bad payment risks. Here's the company-focused copy:

Our Best-Ever Parent-Check Software Is Now Available

Over the past 10 years, we have developed innovative software designed to check parents' histories and ensure they have no outstanding daycare payments or judgments. Now, our most advanced version is available. At Provider Watch, we guaranteed that version 2.0 has the most up-to-date database available. We keep a guarded watch over all our providers to prevent financial problems before they start. Contact us today for a free demonstration.

And the customer-focused copy:

Find Out If Parents Are Bad Payment Risks BEFORE You Accept Them as Customers

It's a sad fact. Providers often face the hassles and stress of parents who are bad daycare payment risks. In many cases, these parents are just making the rounds...hopping from provider to provider. They may have a long history of non-payment or even childcare collection proceedings. If you had only known that to begin with, you would never have accepted them as your customers.

Provider Watch delivers the vital information you need to make confident and accurate decisions based on past daycare payment history.

See the difference? The first is all about the company. The second is all about the daycare center, its needs, and how Provider Watch can help.

It's Not Just About the Copy

Everything about your website should focus on the site visitor. Yes, this includes copy that addresses and speaks to customers in their language and about their needs. It also includes the keyphrases you choose, the colors you use, the layout of the pages, the navigation, the flow of information, the checkout process (if it's an e-commerce site), etc.

With every decision you make about your copy, search optimization, design and usability, ask yourself this, "Does this focus on our site visitors? Specifically, how will this benefit our site visitors?" Because they are the ones with all the money, doesn't it make sense to create an environment that is engaging and comfortable for them?

Jill's Comment: While this isn't typically an SEO issue, we do see this all the time with clients when they write their own copy. Unfortunately, we also see it with some "professional" copywriters' content. It's definitely a tough skill to grasp and it takes a different mindset to do it correctly. And yet it's one of the simplest things you can do with your website to increase its conversions in a big way.

I highly recommend Karon's Copywriting Course for anyone who wants to learn more about writing TRULY professional copy that converts.

Twitter Question of the Week

This week, I asked my Twitter followers:

++Which Parts of SEO Do You Outsource?++

TonyVerre: Non-custom, Directory Link Building, when you need to amass quantity. Custom: Done by hand.

guerillagirl: We only outsource linking...that's it!

ChiqueLife: None – I would like to, but budget constraints for a small business make it difficult, especially with all the charlatans out there.

forestsoftware: None of it – outsourcing means loss of control, from my experience.

hugoguzman: Just the public relations (which results in some juicy, one-way inbound links).

louisedesmarais: I outsource keyword research – that is an art in itself! And it makes SEO writing so much easier and more effective.

I80equipment09:  All custom is done in-house, we outsource articles and landing pages that link our most competitive keywords.

weboptimist: Link begging, er, uh building!

Emma_Lee1:  I'm in-house SEO and simply don't have the budget to outsource. If I had the budget would outsource PPC only.

yuraf: I outsource research and/or content creation, copywriting as there's never enough of good content.

Advisor Wrap-up

That's all for today!

My trip to Arizona and California went well, but I'm glad to be home and in the office this week. Corie really liked the law schools she visited in Arizona and hopes that she gets accepted to at least one of them. The best part of the trip was finding a "saloon" with swinging doors even though it was really just a replica. You can see my not-so-great pics here.

The SMX West conference was also good. I had a chance to meet a number of search marketers I had only previously met through Twitter, so that was fun. The sessions I attended were quite interesting and I even managed to take away a few good nuggets from them.

This week we're busy preparing for our March SEO class. There are still a few openings for the April and May classes if you're interested in improving your SEO skills and having your website thoroughly reviewed by me. If you're still on the fence, remember that spring is a great time to visit the Boston area! Here's where you can learn more about the SEO classes.

Catch you in 2 weeks! – Jill
