In Twitter Power, I described blogs as one aspect of the social media revolution. I think that might have surprised some people. Blogs, after all, pre-date the kind of interaction that we can see on Facebook and LinkedIn. They're more like old-fashioned publishing, in which information comes down from a publisher instead of being created and shared by contributors.



But there is one aspect of blogging that's often forgotten by Internet publishers, and it's incredibly valuable.



At the bottom of each blog post is a space for readers to add their own comments to what you've written.



Those comments are as important for the publishers as they are for the readers.

Apart from Twitter's own terms of service which prohibit obvious things like harassment, transmitting viruses and spamming other members, there really aren't many rules to the site. You can essentially use Twitter however you like.



However, for people and businesses who want to use Twitter successfully (eg: build a following and grow their circle of influence), there are a number of best practices that can be observed. I cover many of these in my book, Twitter Power.



And as I look back on my own tweets, I discover that many of them can be easily categorized. While this list is by no means exhaustive, I think it covers a lot of ground. I present you with my list of Fourteen Types of Tweets.

++Building an eCommerce Site with SEO in Mind++

Have you ever noticed that ecommerce sites have their own set of challenges when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO)? If you're a small ecommerce site owner, I'm sure you have. One reason is that copy plays such a vital role in the optimization process. Because ecommerce sites typically have significantly less content than many other types of websites, they can face struggles that others don't have.

There are a few elements you, as an ecommerce site owner, can put into practice that will boost your tendency to get ranked highly. However, you'll need to start from the ground up. Keep in mind that words on any part of the page or coding count as content.

Keywords First and Foremost

The basis of any optimized website is the keyword list. Why? Because the search terms you choose to focus on will be used in every area of development from the navigational structure all the way through to the copy.

As you look through your choices, think of the structure of your site. When you create a list of terms to use on each page, start broad and work your way to the more specific keywords. For instance, if your site sells shoes, you'll want phrases such as [discount shoes], [shoe store] or [shoes online] for your home page.

As you move through the different sections, select search terms that reflect what's available on those specific pages. In fact, I find it helpful to create a chart and on it I list which terms will go where. It makes keyword usage much easier to keep up with as you move through your site.

Do not use the same exact keyphrases on every single page of your site. Do not try to shove as many keyphrases as you can onto every page of your site. Each page gives you a unique opportunity to rank with the engines because each page stands on its own. Select search terms specifically for the individual pages.

Where do you use the keyphrases that you select? In all these places:

Navigation / Links

As you're setting up site navigation, keep your keyphrases in mind. You'll want to create category and page names using keyphrases whenever possible. Of course, length is always a consideration for navigation names.

Let's say (for the sake of example) that you plan to have separate categories for men's shoes, women's shoes, and children's shoes. After looking at the keyword research, you find that these are, indeed, viable keyphrases.

Those are certainly easy enough to work into your site and they are applicable to your particular categories. In your content management system (CMS), name your first category [women's shoes]. Also name your first navigational link [women's shoes].

When possible, also use keywords in your individual URL page links. While I used to think this carried little weight (if any) with the engines, I've recently read several comments from Google that recommend using keyphrases with dashes in URLs.

This isn't always possible due to the constraints of the CMS, but when you're able to do so, insert keyphrases into URLs.

Breadcrumb Trail

This is a very important SEO and usability feature to add to your site. Breadcrumb trails look like this: home > women's shoes > designer shoes > black > pumps.

It helps visitors see where they've been. But do you notice what else it's doing? It's creating long-tail keyphrases of sorts. If you look on our imaginary keyword list, you'll see that [women's designer black pumps] is another viable keyphrase.

As customers click through the navigation, they are following a trail of keywords. The Googlebot can follow that same trail.

Alt Tags / Image Attributes

Here's another little-known or forgotten area to include keyphrases in. The text used in these tags counts the same as anchor text used in your copy. Be very sure that the keyword-rich descriptions that you include in alt text and image attributes apply to the image they're related to.

Copy

Last, but certainly not least, we move from behind the scenes to the forefront of your site. Good copy is vital for many reasons. Yes, it helps you with search engine rankings, but it also communicates with your site visitors.

The biggest mistake I see ecommerce site owners making is not using copy to connect with visitors. They look at copy as the enemy: something they *have* to include for the sake of the engines. But well-written SEO copy can quickly convert lookers into buyers.

As you write copy for each page, interject keyphrases into your headlines. Google and other engines give particular importance to headlines, so include search terms if at all possible.

In addition, work keyphrases naturally into your category page copy as well as individual product descriptions, using search terms that are specific to each.

Granted, it takes time and planning to build an ecommerce site with content that's truly engineered to rank high. However, if you give due diligence to the steps above, you'll find success comes much easier.

Recently, an individual asked us to solve a problem for him. A member of his family had dealt with a certain company and, he said, was harmed as a result. This individual wanted to know how he could get high rankings for his blog when someone typed in the company's brand name. While he may have had good reason to get the word out about this, it was not the sort of SEO work that High Rankings was interested in.

However, it got me wondering what other people or companies might think or do faced with the same situation. So I threw it out to my 3,800+ Twitter followers and asked:

"Would you help someone optimize their blog for a company's name whose reputation they wanted to tarnish (assuming what they say was true)?"

The awesome thing about Twitter is that the replies start to come in almost immediately! Within 2 minutes @DavidWallace replied: "Guess it would depend on who the company is. Funny as 1st case where I've seen someone want to 'tarnish' rep. Most want to fix."

Which was indeed what made it an interesting question. We are often asked to help fix a company's reputation, but helping to hurt one was a different story. Unlike David, however, I wasn't interested in the project regardless of who the company was. It felt like bad karma to me.

Others, such as my Twitter friend @Skitzzo, weren't worried about karma. He simply tweeted, "Absolutely."

And still others, like @ShariMcConahay, were on the fence depending on the actual specifics. She tweeted: "Hmmmm that is a tricky one! I guess the answer is 'it depends.'"

@ChiqueLife and @ann_donnelly were with me on the karma thang, with Ann echoing my feelings via these 2 tweets:

"What goes around comes around – even if the company 'deserved' it, I wouldn't go there." and "Always say it's better to build your own good reputation instead of pulling down someone else's."

I couldn't agree more!

Things are winding down schoolwise for 2 of the Whalen clan. Tim finishes 10th grade this week, while Corie graduated from Simmons College a few weeks ago. Unsurprisingly, she already has a number of work opportunities that play into her political and social media marketing skills. One in particular that she's contracted for in July is right up her alley. She gets to do what she loves and would be doing anyway, on her own schedule in her own way, while getting paid for it. (Methinks she takes after me in that respect!) Our Hawaiian Whalen, Jamie, will be continuing on throughout the summer at her college as they go year round.

While it's officially summer according to the calendar, it's definitely not evident based on the weather we've been having. Let's hope it clears up in time for the 4th of July (my birthday) at least. Although at this point, I don't hold out much hope of ever seeing the sun again!

They'll tell you exactly what they want, describe it in glorious detail, even point it out to you in the store so that you don't make a mistake and come home with the wrong version.



Then on Christmas morning you get to see their eyes light up as they open the wrapping. It's a thrill... until New Year's Day when the toy is lying forgotten in the corner and the two-buck stocking filler is the game of the moment.



Your users can be a bit like that. It's something that's well-known in the marketing world. Companies will say that they want products that are new, exciting and edgy. They'll say that their focus groups suggest that current offerings are boring and old. Then they'll turn down anything that doesn't look every other product that's already out there.

I love it when academics launch studies of the entrepreneurial world. Sometimes, they come up with truly valuable and fascinating information. I can't think of any off-hand, but I'm sure they must do sometimes.



More usually though, the buffoons claim that their observations have discovered something truly amazing and revolutionary... something that those of us who were actually doing it knew all along. While the prof. is getting another publication and a nomination for a Nobel prize, we're scratching our heads and saying, "Well, yeah...".

++Publishing Text Ads++

Hi Jill,

We are being contacted more and more by companies asking if we will add to our websites and/or clients' websites a short paragraph of text that includes a link to one of their clients' sites – i.e., a text advertisement. These companies are offering a monthly payment for this text and link. So this seems like a good deal for the host/publishing site.

Is there any likely negative impact on the publishing site's SE rankings, Google ranking, etc., from doing this? We have not been able to find any info on forums that indicates this but just thought you might be able to reassure us.

Obviously we would be selective as to which of these text advertisements we accepted and would prefer sites that have a similar content focus to the host site.

Hi Sue,

Great question! It's been a few years since I've discussed paid links, and it was previously from the point of view of the advertiser rather than the publisher. Before you read further, I suggest you read these articles as they provide historical context of the text ad situation.

Now that you've read those, you understand that Google (and all the search engines, really) don't care for text link purchases because they mess with their notion that links are votes, not ads. When they can't distinguish the votes from the ads, it messes with how they determine the relevancy of pages.

While Google can determine some paid links from non-paid ones, they certainly can't tell them all apart. They will probably know a link is paid for if there's some special code you have on your website that automates the linking process, but if you hand-code a link into a page and don't mention its paid status, they probably won't know. (As a side note, disguising ads as editorial content is considered unethical by many.)

As an online publisher who wants to make money accepting ads on your site, you have some issues to consider and be aware of. It is my understanding that, as long as you somehow mark or distinguish the ads on your site as being paid for or sponsored, you won't run afoul of any search engine guidelines. While Google would prefer that you take it a step further and add a nofollow attribute to your links, you shouldn't have to do this in my opinion, because not everyone who has a website has ever heard about the non-standard, nofollow attribute. Of course, if you nofollow the link or even just mark it as paid, the company may no longer be interested in advertising with you, so you'll need to keep that in mind as well.

Whether you use the nofollow attribute and/or mark the links as sponsor ads or do nothing at all to the links, the worst that *should* happen with the search engines is that the page that those links are on may not pass link juice (or PageRank). Notice that I said "should," not "could." I chose that word because I'm only providing my opinion. I'm not Google, nor do I have any insider info from them – in reality they can do whatever they want. However, my feeling is that they would prefer to err on the side of counting links rather than not counting them.

This all assumes that Google even knows or figures out that the links on your site have been bought. If you're simply making a deal with another company to advertise their site on yours, and you don't state that it's an ad, it's unlikely that Google would have any way knowing that money exchanged hands.

The main thing I would make sure of, if I were going to sell space on my site, is that the sites I'm linking to are ones that I would truly recommend to my readers whether or not I was receiving payment. That's the key with any link. As long as it's a real recommendation, you shouldn't have much to worry about. (Once again, notice I said "shouldn't.")

As an interesting twist to this subject, there are some who believe there's a double standard where SEOs are involved. The thinking goes that if you're a known SEO, your sites may be put under more scrutiny in terms of the links that are contained within it. While I believe that's probably a good idea on Google's part, because you really can't trust SEOs as far as you can throw them (kiddin'!), there is some additional paranoia about this issue that I'm not sure I agree with. Michael believes that Google is "profiling" SEOs so that they can't publish any paid links, while allowing others to accept money for links without any consequences. There's also a Sphinn thread related to Michael's theory here:

All in all, I believe that it is every webmaster's right to sell links on their website if they are so inclined, and it's not Google's intention to stop that. They just don't want to count them as votes, which is their right as well.

There was big news last week from the SMX Advanced conference, which we've been discussing at the forum, regarding the use of PageRank sculpting. The gist of it is that Google's Matt Cutts stated that links with the nofollow attribute apparently do not enable more PageRank (or link juice) to flow to the followed links on the page. Instead, the PageRank that would have otherwise been passed just evaporates.
