What Are You Grateful For Today?

"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it." - William Arthur Ward

How often do we gripe about the way things are in the world?

How often do we complain about bad things that have happened to us?

And how often do we lament that things in our lives should be different?

If you are anything like me, the answer is likely to be "way too often."

The truth is, we are prone to grumble. It is easy to gravitate towards the things in our lives that we dislike. It is convenient to place our focus on our trials, obstacles and difficulties.

But how much happier could we be if we changed our focus?

What if we all tried being more grateful for the blessings that surround us?

The News is Bad

The year is 2010.

More and more people are getting their news from the Internet. And many traditional media sources are greatly suffering as a result.

It's no wonder. Fresh information is constantly at our fingertips. I am puzzled why anyone would watch television news or read newspapers any more.

I NEVER watch television news. I NEVER buy a newspaper.

But I happened to be in front of a television the other day while waiting on my car at an oil change shop.

The local news was on, so I watched out of the corner of my eye while checking my email on my iPhone.

What I heard solidified my decision to tune out television news.

Here were the first five stories of the broadcast...

How to Take Control of Your Email

I've been using email for a very long time.

I think my first email address was an AOL.com address from version 1.0 of their software.

Since that time I have had multiple email addresses. I no longer use the AOL.com address, but it is still active!

I have two primary email accounts that I use today.

One of them is my corporate account and the other is my personal account.

Both addresses have become inundated with so much email that they have almost become unmanageable.

I'm not even talking about junk mail. I am talking about the flood of messages I receive from those I have done business with in the past. Whether as a consumer or from a business relationship, my email has gotten out of hand.

As a result, the past couple months have found me resolute to take control of my email.

Here's what I have done...

Living in the Moment

Carpe Diem, goes the phrase.

Literally translated "Seize the Day" from Latin, I first became familiar with the term from the film Dead Poets Society.

While the film had a depressing twist, I am coming to understand more and more the need to take hold of the moments in our lives.

It seems like just yesterday that my son was born. I remember changing that first poopie diaper as though the smell still lingers in the air.

He is now eighteen and off to college.

Can someone tell me precisely WHEN that happened?

It Begins with a Decision

What makes the difference between a person who succeeds and one who doesn't?

What makes the difference between a person who accomplishes great things and another who never does anything?

What makes the difference between a person who gets what they want and one that is left empty-handed?

Certainly, life can throw all kinds of curveballs at us.

We don't get to choose our parents.

We don't get to choose where we are born.

We don't get to choose our race, color or creed.

That's a lot that we are stuck with from the start!

But life is about taking what we start with and making something of it. It's about taking stock of the raw materials and circumstances we are given and doing the best we can with it.

The annals of history are filled with people who overcame all odds to do great things.

The answer to what makes the difference in the lives of different people comes down to one thing...

Healthy Eating at the Office

Experts say that you should eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. I believe they are probably correct, but I have a really hard time adjusting my eating habits that much.

I'm more likely to skip breakfast altogether, eat a decent lunch and pig out for dinner.

I'm also likely to have a mid-afternoon snack to satisfy my sweet tooth.

That has all changed. For the past six weeks I have been taking better care of myself by eating less junk and exercising more.

In this Project Fit video I discuss the snacks that I make available for my staff.

What are we eating? What are we NOT eating?

Watch and see...

End of the Spear

While the modern world we live in tends to be civilized, there are still peoples in third world nations that are not plugged in to our technology-laden society.

As recent as fifty years ago, the Waodani people of the Ecuadorian Amazon basin lived very primitively. Cut off from the rest of the world, the tribe was in a constant war with other tribes. By seeking revenge after revenge, the number in the Waodani tribe was slowing rapidly. Soon they would make themselves extinct.

End of the Spear is a gripping story of the Waodini tribe and a group of missionaries who were called to reach them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

One of the more amazing real-life dramas of faith I have had the pleasure to view, End of the Spear is a testimony to the power of love and forgiveness to transform an entire culture.

It's Not About Me

Death.

Now there's a way to start a blog entry!

It's been said by Steven Covey that we should "begin with the end in mind."

Well, it doesn't get any more "end" than death, does it?

At least as far as our lives on earth are concerned.

We live in a culture that is death-averse. We are fascinated with concepts of the afterlife, but death itself is a horrible thing that we'd rather not look at.

But death has a way of transforming our perspective. It awakens us to the reality of life and challenges us to make our days count.

Where am I going with this?

The Compound Effect

I've been at Project Fit for about a month now.

My goal has been to prove you don't need to go to extremes in order to lose weight and become healthier.

There's nothing wrong with extreme exercising as it really can't do you harm. But there is a problem with extreme dieting.

I don't want to be extreme in any way. After reading The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, I wanted to put his theories to the test.

The idea is that small adjustments consistently made over a long period of time result in massive change.

This applies to just about everything from health and money to business success and relationships.

So what have I been doing and how is that working for me?

If you have been following this blog for any time, you probably know that it is not like other blogs.

I don't have a template or formula for this blog.

It is mine and I use it however I want.

When I started blogging in 2003, my first entries were about my dog, my family and my travels.

I blogged about my political views, current events and films I had recently seen.

Then it happened...

Buckyballs Desktop Toy

Earlier this year I attended Book Expo America in New York City. I had the opportunity of doing a book signing for the release of Twitter Power 2.0.

I had the opportunity to walk the expo floor and encountered a number of interesting vendors.

One of the more interesting booths had absolutely nothing to do with books.

But it caught my eye just the same.

The guy at the booth was playing with a handful of magnetic balls called Buckyballs.

I told him they looked like a lot of fun and he offered to send me a set to review.

I recently received my Buckyballs and have just placed a video online for you to enjoy.

A Visit to My Alternative Medicine Doctor

In this episode of Project Fit, I paid a visit to my alternative medicine doctor to get a second opinion on what I needed to do to become more healthy.

We discussed a number of things, including the foods I eat, my exercise plan and my cholesterol levels.

According to the American Cancer Society all men should be regularly checked for signs of prostate cancer at the age of fifty. I'm not fifty yet, but since I know several people who have been afflicted with this potentially deadly disease, I thought it would be wise to ask my doctor about it.
